The NBA lockout is finally over! After nearly 6 months of new labor negotiations, the NBA owners and the Player's Union finally finalized a new labor agreement contract which is in effect until the year 2004.
According to sources, the player's union won in many aspects. They got to keep the "Larry Bird exception rule," which allowed teams to re-sign there own freeagents for as much as they want without regards to the salary cap. The owners obviously wanted to stop this because players such as Michael Jordan, Shaq O'Neal, Kevin Garnett are making too much money, which is forcing a lot of teams to lose money each year. According to NBA sources, over 1/2 the teams(out of 29) were losing money last year.
The players also won because under the previous aggreement, the players got 57% of all revenues, which the owners drastically wanted to cut to 48%. According to sources close to the aggreement, the players will get 55% of all revenues.
On Tuesday, August 18th, the Sacramento Kings fired head coach, Eddie Jordan. The Kings also decided not to renew the contract of assistant coach Mike Bratz.
The Kings organization also has given both Jordan and Bratz the opportunity to remain with the franchise as outside consultants during their search for a new job. Kings Vice President, Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie said, "I speak for the entire organization when I say that we wish Eddie and Mike the best of luck in their future endeavors."
Jordan was 33-64 as head coach of the Kings. He served as an assistant coach for 5 seasons for former coach, Garry St. Jean.
Bratz worked for 5 seasons as a Kings assistant coach, until this last season under Jordan.

On Monday, June 29th, 1998, the NBA decided that it was in the league's best interest to have a lockout. No trades and free agent signings are not allowed until the lockout has ended. Any team that violates this rule could be fined as much as $1 million. There are no summer camps or team practices to be allowed. The lockout is expected to last until early December.
Some local Phoenix Suns members have been practicing on their own however. Coach Danny Ainge is coaching his son's summer basketball team. And Starting PG Jason Kidd has been keeping himself busy at a local High School. Kidd can be found practicing almost everyday at Thunderbird High School. Many other NBA players have also been practicing on their own to stay in shape for when the lockout ends. |
